James Caran was the first kid on the block to own a four-track. Before he could read, he could cut a blues album playing all the instruments himself. Today—hand him an obscure and oblong-shaped artifact, tell him it's a musical instrument, and within an hour he'll be playing it proficiently. Next week he'll be recording it to analog tape.

But James doesn't just make great music. He fosters it. He creates the circumstances wherein music happens. And he does so not simply with his own virtuosic skill, but by bringing great musicians together and letting their uniqueness enrich the groundwork he's laid—producing mixes and engineering sound in multiple different formats and environments for and with countless acts the world over. He has collaborated with some fine folks, establishments, and organizations such as The Roots, Quincy Jones, Herbie Hancock, Coldplay, Naturally Seven, Diana Ross, Michael Bublé, Taj Mahal, the Budokan, Arseneo Hall, Jay Leno, Madison Square Garden, New Orleans Jazz Festival, and The White House. Ishka Lha Bio

Historically known as a trailblazer in the visionary art movement for her renowned mystical paintings, Ishka Lha has been more recently creating and sharing original music pieces, some conjuring counterparts to her visual works and beyond, with her latest music project, JAMeeSHKA, in collaboration with singer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist, James Caran.

Making music has been an integral part of Ishka’s healing and creative practice since she was a little girl. She grew up singing in church, was often found crooning improvised songs to animals on her family’s farm, and later excelled in choral groups and recitals as a teenager. In addition to early training on piano, she later played flute and clarinet in her high school jazz band. She also grew up playing lead roles in her community’s yearly theater productions, and enjoyed a stint in professional education in television. Alongside visual art, music and stage performance have always been at the heart of Ishka’s creative wheelhouse.

Ishka eventually began writing her own songs, and started sharing them in community and ceremony as companions to her visual art. Soon after, her live musical duo, JAMeeSHKA, hit the stage with unique multi-media musical experiences and site specific journeys, featuring both composed and improvised pieces. Carried by childlike faith and a lover’s passion, Ishka’s lyrics and vocals are wild, soulful, and empowering, yet delicate, angelic, and prayerful— a perceptive coalescence that breathes light into the aching heart.
